A brief history of salmon management, 1030-present

The first legal protections for Atlantic salmon in Britain went on the books in 1030. Salmon protections are in the Magna Carta.

It took some time for North Americans to get the message about salmon conservation, but here we are, nearly a 1,000 years after the first fish protections were signed into law, still debating how best to protect the fish while accomodating modern economic activity. 

Bob King, long time reporter at KDLG in Dillingham and a long time student of fisheries and their management, gave a short presentation on the history of managing salmon fisheries at a salmon habitat policy forum Thursday in Kenai.
