New fundraising opportunity brings together women, non-profits

For non-profit and charitable organizations, raising funds is always at the forefront. A program new to the Kenai is supposed to make those fundraising efforts quicker and easier, $10,000 at a time. It’s called 100 Women Who Care.

“A group in Michigan came up with it in 2006," said Tami Murray with the Kenai Watershed Forum, which is sponsoring the first 100 Women Who Care event next week.

“Basically, 100 women come into a room, three women are chosen from that 100 women to pitch a cause or charity they are passionate about. They each get five minutes and the group votes on who they want to support.”

Murray says even though the idea is to support a specific group or program, any organization that gets involved stands to benefit.

“I can see, because we have a lot of very generous women in our community, the other causes might find some new funders in that room. So I can see women writing checks to other non-profits besides the one they’re donating to that quarter. It’s a great way for every non-profit to network with community minded women, and there are a lot of them that participate, so it’s a great way for us to learn more about who’s in our community and who needs a little extra help.”

In order to donate, or be considered to pitch the group, you have to be a member of the group. And this isn’t a one and done. Another round of pitches will happen every fiscal quarter. And, the whole thing is over in about an hour. No national charities can be considered. The idea is to keep it local. Two meetings are coming up where groups will be chosen to pitch at the end of the quarter in June. March 28th at 6 p.m. at the Best Western Bidarka in Homer the following evening at the Cannery Lodge in Kenai at 6.
