Mary Poppins ready for Peninsula stage debut

Shaylon Cochran/KDLL

The classic musical Mary Poppins will have its first stage showing at Nikiski High School this weekend.

Developed from the iconic film of the same name, the musical tells the story of the Banks family in Edwardian England seeking the help of a nanny who, it turns out, has more to offer than a few packed lunches.

“(It’s demanding) but it’s fun. It is a big part to live up to, I guess. Watching the moving with Julie Andrews, it’s like ok, I can’t be Julie Andrews, but I’ll take my version on it and do my best.” - Emilee Tiner, Mary Poppins

“It’s coming together really well. It started out kind of rough, but now we’re really getting in gear and getting down to the bottom of it.” Treasa Cooper, Mrs. Brill

“I think what you have to do is get the kids to realize that there are advantages to the stage play and there are different ways in which you can play it...There’s a lot of emotion in this script, and I think that when people are right here, just a few yards from the stage, (they will) feel that emotion in the quaver’s of these children’s voices and in the lines.” - Joe Rizzo, Director
