Icy roads Saturday night delay Peninsula athletes return home

A charter bus carrying the Homer girls basketball team got stuck partially in the ditch in Cooper Landing, blocking traffic in both lanes for some time on Saturday night. No injuries were reported.

According to a Facebook post by Chad Felice, coach of the Lady Mariners, the road was so icy that the bus, moving at under 20 mph, just slid down with the grade of the road.

The team had stopped in Cooper Landing for a rest break while returning home from weekend games, and according to a woman who identified herself as the driver's wife, a rear tire "got sucked into the ditch."

Another poster said the passengers got off and took refuge on the bus the Homer boys basketball team was on while their bus was pulled back on to the road.

At least five busses were delayed by the accident, but all got back underway when the highway was reopened at 11:12 p.m.
